Component side up
Wiring: the Lipo Rider Plus and the Pi Zero 2 W, component side up, seven numbered connectionsBoth boards from the component side, to scale. The Lipo Rider Plus is on top: its Li-po socket at the top left, plus on the upper pin; its USB-C port on the left edge, USB-A on the right edge, its slide switch on the top edge, and along the bottom edge the 8-pin header, left to right VUSB, GND, BAT, GND, 5V, GND, EN, 3V3. The Pi Zero 2 W is below: the 40-pin header along its top edge, pin 1 the square pad at the microSD end of the inner row, the even pins along the edge; the microSD slot on the left edge, the mini-HDMI, USB and power ports on the bottom edge, the camera connector on the right edge. 1: the 18650 cell's lead into the Li-po socket, red to plus. 2: the Rider's 5V to Pi pin 2. 3: the Rider's GND next to 5V to Pi pin 9, running past the microSD end of the header and reaching pin 9 from the board side. 4: the switch, its middle pin to the Rider's EN and an outer pin to the GND next to EN; closed, it turns everything off. 5: Pi pin 4 (5V) through a 330 ohm resistor to the LED's long leg, the short leg to Pi pin 6 (GND); the LED shines at the light sensor. 6: Pi pin 1 (3V3) to the light sensor (LDR); its other leg to Pi pin 7 (GPIO 4) and through a 10 kilohm resistor to Pi pin 14 (GND). 7, only for the charging port in the centre of the back: a USB-C board, its VBUS to the Rider's VUSB and its GND to the GND next to it. Otherwise you charge through the Rider's own USB-C port.18650Li-po+−Lipo Rider PlusVUSBGNDBATGND5VGNDEN3V3switchUSB-CmicroSDPi Zero 2 W330 ΩLEDLDR10 kΩ124679141234567

Good to know

  • The LED runs on 5 V. On 3V3 it is too dim to trigger.
  • The LDR runs on 3V3, never 5 V. The Pi’s pins aren’t 5 V tolerant.
  • Closing the switch turns everything off.
  • Keep it flat. Short leads, heat-shrink on every joint: the cartridge is only 24 mm tall.

Put it together

  1. LED and LDR into their housings, facing each other across the wheel.
  2. Lipo Rider onto its four posts until it clicks.
  3. Only with the centre port: feed the USB-C board’s wires in through the back, slide the board into its pocket and glue it.
  4. Cell into its cradle, lead toward the Rider.
  5. Camera module into the sensor holder, sensor facing out. Don’t touch the sensor.
  6. Sensor holder into the front of the body.
  7. Wheel onto its seat, then press the closer on until it clicks. The wheel must spin freely.
  8. Pi onto its four pins, with the camera flex folded loosely.
  9. Switch into the recess in the lid.

Test before you press the lid on: see Software.
